Thinking about getting a cat? Find out about the time, energy and money needed to add a cat to your family.

Cats need time

Cats, like all pets, need plenty of love and attention. Creating a human bond is essential to developing a lasting relationship with your cat. Most cats want to be near you when you are home, so make an effort to pet him every time you come across him. Spend time each day playing with your cat and stimulating him physically and mentally. Every cat is different and requires a different level of attention. By knowing him, you will know when your cat wants attention and when he doesn’t.

Cats need supplies

Before you bring your new cat home, make sure you have all the basic supplies. For example, high-quality food, food and water bowls (preferably steel, glass or ceramic), a tray and litter box, toys, a scratching post and a carrier for vet visits.

Cats need to feel comfortable

Be careful when introducing your new cat to your home, especially if it is a newborn. Cats appreciate the comfort, safety and familiarity of their environment. Let her explore every nook and cranny of the house or apartment. This will help him feel secure in his new surroundings. If children are around, teach them how to hold and pet the cat properly. Children should also be taught the basics of cat body language, so they know to leave the cat alone when it has its ears back, wags its tail, growls or hisses.

Cats need a good litter tray

Your cat should be able to fit comfortably in the tray and there should be enough room for him to carry out his elimination ritual, i.e., sniffing, digging, squatting, rolling over and covering his droppings. The garbage can should be private and easily accessible. Once you have decided on the location of the litter pan, do not move it. Clean the litter tray at least twice a day.

Cats need to scratch

Scratching is an innate behavior and should be remedied by providing your cat with the right equipment and place for it. A scratching post should be at least 30 inches high so that the cat can fully stretch its front paws. It should be made of soft wood or wrapped in sisal rope (not carpet) and mounted on a stable base that won’t tip over.

Cats need to be groomed

Self-brushing is an integral part of a cat’s life. However, you should brush your cat at least once a week with a soft bristle brush to keep his coat soft, shiny and healthy and reduce the risk of hairballs.
